The Graduation Suit

For many people, the graduation day represents their first contact with formal attire and for many also the first time one is expected to wear a suit. It may also be the first time that a young man invests in a quality suit. There are many pitfalls to watch out for and therefore I have created a guide where I highlight a few things to keep in mind when getting ready for your graduation ceremony. A guide on how to dress, with general tips on suit, tie and shirt choices, with some added guidance based on what I think is a good gift for someone who is graduating.

The graduation ceremony is a somewhat formal event, which means that you ideally should not experiment much with the suit choice. A navy blue, single-breasted suit, will take you far. Make sure that the jacket fits well, mainly in the shoulder area but also that the chest width, the general length and sleeve length is correct. Make sure that the trousers have a high enough waist and are the right length. You do not want the pants to sit on the hips, it is better that they sit up towards the navel, also, you do not want the pants to gather and bunch up like a large lump of fabric against the shoes. You can of course wear a double-breasted suit as well, but that puts even higher demands on the fit. If you are not completely comfortable in wearing a double-breasted suit, you should perhaps steer clear of it. Also, it usually looks more natural on someone a bit older.

It's not advisable recommending that you spend too much money on the graduation suit, as both body measurements and preferences often change during the years that follow this day. For the most part, thinking that you are investing in a suit that you can use for a decade is a bit optimistic.

For the navy blue suit, the white shirt is the most classic and the obvious choice for me. You can consider whether you want a single or French cuff, where the latter is consodered slightly more formal. I think it's nice to wear a pair of cufflinks for this type of event. A monogram can be a nice added feature. As for the collar, I think you should go with something classic, like a spread collar or even a cut-away (but stay clear of the too aggressively cut-away collars). 

Feel free to experiment with colours and patterns when it comes to the choice of tie. Keeping that in mind, I would recommend choosing a colour that stands out, rather than a crazy pattern. A classic tie with a subtle pattern, with a wonderful playful colour will make you stand out appropriately. A tip can be to go for a yellow, orange, blue or green tie with a discrete pattern and structure to match with the navy suit. If you choose to wear a pocket square, it shall never be the exact same design and colour as the tie, rather just complement it by picking up a few of the colours in your total outfit. If you are unsure about how to match pocket squares, a white square with hand rolled edges is always a good idea.

As I touched on before, a pair of cufflinks with monograms can be an excellent choice. I would, however, make sure that they are in a modest size, especially if you are not used to wearing them. Pete & Harry have a good selection gold or silver-coloured cufflinks, but pair of silk knots can work just as well .

When wearing a navy suit, pairing it with a black oxford shoe is the most classic, and in my opinion, right choice. The black oxford shoe is the most formal choice and should ideally be ridiculously well-polished. With that said, there is really nothing wrong in wearing tassel loafers (to name but one alternative), but it reduces the level of formality somewhat. Regardless of the model, opt for a black shoe.

Gifts

There are several options and thus no obvious answer to what is the perfect graduation gift. But a watch is perhaps the most appreciated gift and it's nice to be able to gift one of high, Swiss quality. Unfortunately, this level of quality often  comes with a hefty price tag. That is why the vintage watch market is such a treat. You can find quality, history and a well-known brand at an affordable price, and in addition, vintage watches are usually much better looking than new ones.

Cufflinks are also great graduation gifts. For example, gifting a pair with engravings in the form of a monogram shows that the gift is well-considered and personal. 

A tie is always a good gift, graduation or not. It is equally appreciated and easy to give away. Especially when you are a young student and may not feel that you can afford to spend much money on a tie. A graduation gift in the form of a tie is also an investment in the future, helping the person to look sharp when going for his first job interview.

For the same reason, a bag or briefcase can be perfect graduation gifts. By arriving to work, or the university for that matter, with a nice leather briefcase, you set the right tone immediately.

Studentkostymen

För många är studenten den första kontakten med formell klädsel och för många också första gången man förväntas bära kostym. Det kanske även är första gången man investerar i en kvalitetskostym. Det finns många fallgropar att se upp för och därför tänkte jag här erbjuda en guide där jag lyfter några saker att tänka på när man gör sig redo för sitt studentfirande. Det blir dels en guide i hur man bör klä sig med generella tips kring bland annat kostym- slips- och skjortval men det blir även vägledning utifrån vad jag tycker är en bra present till någon som ska ta studenten.

Studenten är en relativt formell tillställning vilket gör att du inte bör experimentera särskilt mycket med valet av kostym. Med en mörkblå, enkelknäppt kostym kommer du långt. Se till att kavajen sitter bra främst i axelpartiet men även att ärmlängden är korrekt. Se också till att byxorna har tillräckligt hög midja samt är i rätt längd. Man vill inte att byxorna ska sitta på höften utan de ska upp mot naveln och man vill absolut inte att byxan ska samlas och ligga som ett stort stycke tyg mot skon. Du kan givetvis bära en dubbelknäppt kostym också men det sätter ännu högre krav på passformen. Om man inte är helt bekväm i den dubbelknäppta kostymen bör man akta sig, dessutom gör den sig i regel bättre på någon som har några år på nacken.

Det är svårt att rekommendera att lägga alldeles för mycket pengar på studentkostymen då både kroppsmått och preferenser ofta ändras under åren som följer studenten. Att tro att man investerar i en kostym som man kan använda i decennium vore att vara väl optimistisk.

Till den mörkblåa kostymen är den vita skjortan mest klassisk och för mig det självklara valet på studenten. Däremot kan man fundera på om man vill ha en enkel eller dubbel manschett, därtill även fundera på vad man vill signalera med valet av krage. Jag tycker det är trevligt att vid den här typen av tillställningar bära ett par manschettknappar, exempelvis i metall med monogram. Vad gäller krage tycker jag att man ska gå klassiskt även där i form av en cut away-krage.

Det är i valet av slips man med fördel kan experimentera med färger och mönster. Jag skulle däremot rekommendera att man väljer en färg som sticker ut snarare än ett hysteriskt mönster. En klassisk slips med ett subtilt mönster men med en härligt somrig färg kommer göra att du sticker ut på ett lagom sätt. Ett tips kan vara att satsa på en gul, orange, blå eller buteljgrön slips med diskret mönster och struktur till den mörkblå kostymen. Väljer man att bära näsduk är det viktigt att denna inte matchar slipsens utförande.

Som jag snuddade vid tidigare kan ett par manschettknappar med monogram vara ett utmärkt val. Jag skulle däremot se till att de är i en smakfull storlek, ingen gillar ett par som är alldeles för stora och iögonfallande utan håll dem relativt små. Man kan ha guld- eller silver-färgade manschettknappar men det är minst lika snyggt med ett par i knut-form.

Bär man en mörkblå kostym är den svarta Oxfordskon det mest klassiska och enligt mig det rätta valet. Det är också den svarta oxfordskon som är det mest formella valet och det är viktigt att de är löjligt välputsade. Med det sagt är det inte fel att exempelvis bära en tasselloafer men det minskar formalitetsnivån något. Oavsett modell, satsa på en svart sko. 

Studentpresenter

Det finns flera alternativ och därmed inget självklart svar på vad som är den perfekta studentpresenten. Men en klocka kanske är den mest uppskattade presenten och det är extra fint att kunna ge bort en av hög, schweizisk kvalitet. Dessvärre är ofta schweizisk kvalitet synonymt med dyrt men det är därför man ska titta åt vintage-hållet om man vill ge bort en klocka. Då kan man få kvalitet, historia och välkänt varumärke till ett överkomligt pris och dessutom är vintage-klockor i regel snyggare än nyproduktioner.

Manschettknappar är också en utmärkt studentpresent. Då kan man med fördel ge bort ett par med gravyr i form av monogram, det visar att presenten är genomtänkt och personlig. Det är ett generellt tips, ett monogram lyfter alltid nivån på presenten ett par steg.

Slipsen är alltid en bra present, examen eller inte. Det är lika delar uppskattat som enkelt att ge bort. Särskilt när man är ung student och kanske inte känner att man har råd att lägga tusentals kronor på en slips. En studentpresent i form av en slips hjälper således personen att se skarp ut när denne ska ut i arbetslivet.

Av samma anledning, alltså att se skarp ut när man ska ut i arbetslivet, är en väska eller portfölj en perfekt studentpresent. Det är den här typen av detaljer som ofta förstör en outfit eller åtminstone gör att den inte är helt komplett. Genom att komma till arbetet, eller universitetet för den delen, med en riktigt snygg läderportfölj sätter du rätt ton direkt.
